the sounds of summer

This time of year I find I have to repeatedly pause whatever Is watching, whether streaming or DVD. Then I have strain my hearing, trying to do bat echolocation and shit. Usually I end up wandering from one room to another and pausing.

Because there's some weird-ass sound.

And I just want to know is it my DVD player/TV about to die? Or is this the refrigerator's last gasp? (Shhhh, it's the oldest appliance in the house, but don't let it know that.) Or dear god is something in the central air system kaput and about to saturate my home with deadly gas again?

Or is someone somewhere in the neighborhood using a suburbia scaled-down version of real farm equipment on their .15-acre lot? Maybe driving a riding tiller down the street at 3 mph?

Sometimes I roll my eyes so hard it hurts.
