It’s a good day to read. Or, better still, to sleep.

It took less than a week of long commutes and shelving books to undo all of the hot tub magic. siiiiiigh. I mean, of course I knew it couldn’t last forever. No stiffness. No lower back pain. But I miss it. It was lovely while it lasted.

I’m here on the couch killing time until I can go up to the courthouse to renew my car registration. I could go anytime, really, but I’m waiting for the mailman. It’s a king story, but what the hey, I’ve got time.

The local Kroger has been out of cat food for several weeks now. Not totally out. There are still small bags of the super expensive fancy-schmancy cat foods, but:

a) a 4lb bag costs more than a 16lb of the wee demon’s usual brand,

b) many (not all) of the expensive specialty brands are no better or even worse for cats, and

c) cat digestive systems are a mess and it’s best if you don’t change their food.

Mainly it’s the first reason.

So Kroger is out. Walmart, too. I haven’t been to all of the stores down in Lexington, but the Kroger and Walmart by my mom’s house are out. And the auto-feeder (recently dubbed BreakfastBot 3000) is getting really low.

BreakfastBot 3000 is a great device, but awfully temperamental if you let it get totally empty. Which is true of the wee demon, too.

So I broke down and ordered Torii’s indoor cat hairball prevention food from Amazon (fulfilled by an Amazon sales partner). Supposedly it was delivered — by USPS!?! — yesterday. Which I worried about all day because it poured, like build an ark rained, all day. But not to worry because there was no soaked bag of dry cat food in the remains of a totally rain-melted box on my porch. Nope, no 16 pounds of cat food anywhere.

I’m hoping that the regular mail carrier, a nice and efficient man who never confuses my address with someone up the street or two streets over, decided to wait until today (light snow flurries, no puddles because the temp dropped 40 degrees overnight so everything froze) to haul that out of his truck and up to my porch. If not, then I guess I’m making the rounds down in Lexington and fighting with Amazon (again) this afternoon.

Why did I fool with Amazon when there is a similar sort of online warehouse just for pet supplies? A good question. Because the last time I ordered from said online pet company everything was packed in one large box. One. LARGE. Box.

Everything.

Everything from a 2oz packet of teeth cleaning treats to a 40lb box of litter. All. In. One. Box.

So, yeah, never again.

Oh, and it rained that day, too. I had to tear open the box — with my bare hands which I could do since it was that wet — out on the porch with the rain teeming down. Lug in the litter box, only slightly less wet. And then bring in everything else from the shipment.

ahhh memories

I got to watch the new garbage service in action. My city recently outsourced trash collection. Apparently the new company doesn’t let the crew get out of the truck? Or maybe they can’t cross the street? Or they somehow didn’t notice that there are houses on both sides?

Whatever the reason, the truck got all of the herbie curbies on my side of the street and did a crazy ass u-turn at the cross street to come back for the herbies on the other side.

My street is an older, narrower downtown road. The “big” cross street is only wide in comparison. The whole maneuver was . . . There are no words, really. It could be a Dr. Seuss book.

And to think that I saw it on Mulberry Street.

Which circles nicely back to today’s theme, which you’ve probably forgotten is: reading. So go read a book.

(Disclaimer: I don’t live on Mulberry Street, altho there is actually a Mulberry Street nearby.)
